Sir Isaac Newton Essay Example for Free

Sir Isaac Newton Essay Sir Isaac Newton-one of the greatest minds in history. He was an all-around genius. He was a mathematician, a natural philosopher, an inventor, and an English physicist. Some of the phenomenal things he did include studying how light reacts to reflection, formulating laws of universal gravitation and motion, and built the first ever reflecting telescope. In 1642 Isaac Newton was born into a very poor farming family in Woolsthorpe, England. When he was very young, his grandma took over and raised him. During this time, he and his grandma lived with a man who took Newton under his wing. Newton then discovered his love for chemical operations. Even though Newton was terrible at grammar and school in general, (at his school in a nearby town) he excelled when it came to using his hands. He made sundials, model windmills, a water clock, a mechanical carriage, and flew kites with lanterns attached to their tails. At only 14, Newton’s mother had taken him out of school to continue the family farming. Since his father died before he was even born, Newton didn’t have much of a father figure to help teach him how to farm properly. Even though he was great with his hands, he was horrible at farming. The family was then persuaded to let him go to the University of Cambridge to study to become a preacher. He was accepted into Cambridge in the year of 1161. His studies included arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, and optics. One of Newton’s professors was Isaac Barrow. The two of them clicked. Barrow could see Newton’s desire for learning. He challenged him with great passion. When Newton was 23 he had already received his bachelor’s degree. Just that year, 1665, the very deadly Bubonic Plague (Black Death) had hit. Newton was forced to leave Cambridge. He had returned back to his home town of Woolsthorpe. He stayed there for two years to do independent studies. This is what started Newton to study the things he is known for by today. In some way, the Black Death could be considered a good thing. In the sense that if it had never happened, we wouldn’t have laws of gravity. While at home he made great progress in what we call â€Å"method of fluxions† (calculus) and this was also the time when Newton observed the apple falling from the tree. Newton continued to stay in contact with Isaac Barrow. He sent some of this  work to Barrow, Barrow then made sure Newton’s work was known to several of the leading mathematicians of Britain and Europe. Once he hit age 30, year 1675, Newton suffered a mental breakdown which continued well until 1684. During this time, he was trying to prove to a man named Hooke that particles would spiral into the center of the Earth, rather than form an ellipse. Halley, a man who was also interested in orbits; finally convinced Newton to publish his work. Newton devoted 2 years to work on the project. The result became one of the most important and influential works on physics of all times, ‘Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica’ (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) often shortened to Principia Mathematica .The Principia didn’t show up until late summer 1687. When writing the book Newton tried especially hard to make it very difficult to read, so people wouldn’t attack his ideas. In the early 1690’s, possibly in response to the intellectual exertion of writing the Principia, Newton suffered a period of depression. He started his work on the moon’s motions. A few years later Newton published another great book called Optics which explained the theory of light and color as well as some of his mathematic ways. In 1725, Newton moved from London to Kensington for health reasons. Two years later Newton died from health issues. Newton really changed the ways of math. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have such a high math level as we do today.

A Mans Nightmare Essay -- Character Analysis, Swift, Celia

Jonathan Swift’s poem, â€Å"A Lady’s Dressing Room,† represents a man’s love for a woman as the author, Strephon, and audience explore the happenings inside a woman’s bedroom. Like many other men, Strephon is an obsessed lover whose vision of women is distorted by eighteenth century radical ideals of love and beauty. While the poem is a satire, Swift tries to establish that love is blind and presents that love is only based on beauty of women. By introducing an idealistic lover into a realistic environment, he examines the disturbing end results as Celia falls from her godlike state. As she is humanized, Swift successfully demolishes the ridiculous fantasies of love and beauty, and men are also able to see more clearly behind the clothing and make-up. In â€Å"A Lady’s Dressing Room,† Swift exposes the contradiction between idealized love created by eighteenth century society and reality, as he forces Strephon see past Celia’s faà §ade by investigating Celia’s dressing room and discovering traumatizing facts as well as disillusioning him with the help of Swift’s vivid description. Swift represents love as impractical and unnatural in his satire in order to mock eighteenth century society because of their obsession with love and beauty. Initially, Swift begins by referring to Celia as a â€Å"goddess from her chamber†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (ln 1) in order to mock the glorification women tend to receive from men. Also, Celia spends â€Å"five hours†¦in dressing† (ln 2-3). He attacks and ridicules the idealizations of love and beauty because women were seen as gorgeous goddesses and their beaus idolize them to no end. Women also spend an inordinate amount of time attempting to make themselves beautiful and well dressed, but they actually spend little time trying to conceal t... ..., Swift only attempts to demolish the romantic ideals of women and beauty produced from the eighteenth century society. He wants to reveal the reality that mankind is imperfect and love only blinds these blemishes. And, the only way to illustrate reality to the public is to reduce women to most simple yet repulsive bodily functions that equalize both men and women. As society places more prominence on idealized love, Swift criticizes these false idealizations and exposes the truth to the public through his poetic satire. According to Swift, eighteenth century love is more of an infatuation with women and beauty as both tend to obsess over first impressions of appearances. As proved by Strephon invading Celia’s room, Jonathan Swift only further emphasizes that love is not solely based upon physical appearances because even looks, most especially, can be deceiving.

The United States Are Microcosms Of Society Education Essay

IntroductionClassrooms across the United States are microcosms of society. The faces in schoolrooms today reflect the altering demographics of the communities in which the schools are located. Today, schools are informants to the rapid alterations in pupil demographics, in peculiar, the growing of Latino pupils in schoolrooms throughout the United States ( KewalRamani, Gilbertson, Fox, & A ; Provasnik, 2007 ) . With rapid alterations in demographics, come challenges and issues, in add-on to other challenges which schools are seeking to run into. Educators face many challenges in public schools today. District leaders, campus leaders, and instructors must happen ways to turn to such issues as ( 1 ) planning and presenting standards-based direction, ( 2 ) meeting the demands of federal and province answerability systems, ( 3 ) making more with less resources, ( 4 ) determination, hiring, and maintaining extremely qualified instructors, ( 5 ) keeping safe and drug-free acquisition environments, ( 6 ) guaranting all high school alumnuss are college or calling ready, ( 7 ) cut downing the dropout rates, ( 8 ) designing, implementing, and measuring particular plans for fighting scholars and academically advanced scholars, ( 9 ) supplying a consistent sequence of classs at the secondary degree, ( 10 ) integrating federal, province, or local mandated enterprises, ( 11 ) set uping working partnerships with households and communities, and ( 12 ) happening ways to turn to other sociopolitical and sociocultural factors impacting their s chools ( Conchas, 2009 ; McNutly, 2009 ; Nelson, Palonsky, & A ; McCarthy, 2007 ) . Educators must happen ways to plan, implement, and measure direction and plans for the culturally diverse and linguistic communication minority pupils, who now sit in their schoolrooms, every bit good ( Gay, 2000 ) . This peculiar challenge has plagued public schools for decennaries ( Editorial Projects in Educational Research Center, EPERC, 2008 ; National Education Association, NEA, 2007 ) . From its origin, public instruction has been considered a agencies to accomplish societal, political, and economic benefits. Horace Mann referred to public instruction as the â€Å" great equaliser † ( Alexander & A ; Alexander, ) . He and others like him viewed public instruction as a manner for pupils and households to accomplish the aforesaid benefits. But, one must step back and reflect on the history of public instruction in this state. For whom were the first public schools designed? Who were the kids? Which sociocultural groups did they stand for? What were the purposes of the public schools who did educate pupils who did non stand for the mainstream cultural group? As persons peruse the pupil accomplishment informations, graduation informations, dropout informations, keeping informations, suspension and ejection informations, school to prison informations, disproportional representation of cultural and cultural groups in particular plan informations, college keeping ra tes, and such, there are obvious racial and cultural disparities and spreads which result in socioeconomic spreads, employment spreads, political spreads, wellness spreads, and others ( ____ ) . From the information, one may reason that the â€Å" great equaliser † has non delivered on its promise. However, schools are designed to acquire the consequences they get. McNutly ( 2009 ) stated that schools have behaved their manner into their current state of affairs and schools can act their manner out of it. There are schools run intoing the educational and non-educational demands of all pupils, including culturally and linguistically diverse pupil groups. Such schools are non merely effectual but, culturally antiphonal ( Gay, 2000 ) . I posit that genuinely effectual schools are culturally antiphonal schools. The schools are designed to run into the educational demands of the pupils in their schoolrooms. The leading and instructors demonstrate a strong belief that all pupils in their charge can be successful. These pedagogues collaboratively work with each other, pupils, and households. I, besides posit that the work of theses culturally antiphonal and effectual schools can be replicated. Becoming an effectual and culturally antiphonal school involves a alteration procedure that has an impact on every stakeholder at every degree in the system ( Hall and Hord, 2006 ) . To better understand the place I take, I present a reappraisal of the literature. I will portion the conceptual model which guides my survey. As I conducted the reappraisal of the literature, I did so with the aid of four steering inquiries adapted from the work by McCarthy ( _ ) . McCarthy provinces that if pedagogues can reply four inquiries as the y plan and present direction, Why, What, How and What if, all acquisition manners in schoolrooms will be addressed. I borrowed from McCarthy ‘s work to develop four inquiries to assist me carry on a comprehensive survey of effectual and culturally antiphonal schools, in peculiar, those schools now faced with educating one of largest and fastest turning cultural groups in the United States and their classrooms-the Latino pupil population ( KewalRamani, et. Al, 2007 ) . The four guiding inquiries were: ( 1 ) Why is at that place a demand for effectual and culturally antiphonal schools, ( 2 ) What are the features of effectual and culturally antiphonal schools, ( 3 ) How do schools go effectual and culturally antiphonal? , and ( 4 ) What are effectual and culturally antiphonal instructional patterns? . The purpose of the literature reappraisal is to reply the four guiding inquiries. In add-on, the reappraisal includes a limited survey of three back uping theories and constructs found in the literature on racially and ethnically diverse pupils in schools. The three back uping theories are: ( a ) critical race theory, ( B ) cultural reproduction theory, and ( degree Celsius ) the shortage theoretical account. A reappraisal of the current context and tendencies about racially and ethnically diverse pupils groups in schools will follow. A reappraisal of tendencies and the current context will supply a background to the racial and cultural disparities in schools today. The undermentioned background information will include: ( a ) the current population informations tendencies, ( B ) current disparities of educational results along cultural and lingual diverseness lines, ( degree Celsius ) an account of the grounding thought by which information is filtered, effectual and culturally anti phonal schools.Theoretical and Conceptual ModelPublic schools have been fighting with the issue of racial and cultural disparities in educational results such as pupil public presentation, graduation rates, dropout rates, suspension and ejection rates, disproportional representation of cultural groups in particular plans, and such for some clip ( NEA, 2007 ) . Scholars ( Payne, ) have attempted to explicate the disparities along socioeconomic lines. While the deficiency of resources does hold an impact on pupil accomplishment, race affairs. Gosa and Alexander ( 2008 ) found disparities between White pupils and Afro-american pupils from flush households, therefore reenforcing race does matter. Students come to school with different lived experiences, cognition, accomplishments, perceptual experiences, and demands ( Tyler, Uqdah, Dillihunt, Besatty-Hazelbaker, Conner, Gadson. . . & A ; Stevens, 2008 ) . Students come from different environments and enter school with racial disparities that exist sing school preparedness, over which schools have small to no control ( Parret & A ; Barr, 2009 ) . However, racial disparities continue and widen over clip in schools. Several bookmans posit that it is the schools ‘ constructions, policies, processs, patterns, engrained positions, beliefs, and values that reinforce and advance racial disparities in educational results ( Artiles & A ; Bal, 2009 ; Gosa & A ; Alexander, 2007, Jay 2003, Ladson-Billings and Tate, 1995 ) . Cultural clangs between school and place, trial prejudice, system prejudice, negative and positive stereotyped positions, poorness, linguistic communication differences, deficiency of relational trust, and other sociocultural, sociohistorical, and sociopolitical factors play a critical function in the current racial and cultural disparities in educational results in our public schools ( Skiba, 2009 ; Salend & A ; Garrick-Duhaney, 2005 ) . Mickelson ( 2003 ) stated that educational systems were responsible for the turning racial disparities in educational results and that the disparities widen with each twelvemonth, cultural minority pupils attended school. Scholars have tried to explicate the bing racial and cultural disparities in educational results utilizing assorted theoretical and conceptual models, such as the Critical Race Theory, Cultural Reproduction Theory, and the Deficit Model.Critical Race TheoryCritical Race Theory as a tool. An person ‘s cultural individuality is a fluid and dynamic societal concept influenced by lived experiences, internal picks, and outside agents ‘ perceptual experiences of that individuality ( Fergus, 2009 ; Lee, 2008 ) . Race and racism have shaped the history of the United States and its traditional societal establishments ( Yosso, 2005 ) . Racism, nevertheless elusive, continues to impact societal establishments, i.e. , schools ( Yosso ) . McNutly ( 2009 ) stated that is was non so much an issue of race as it was an issue of engagement. Gosa and Alexander reported that race mattered in schools ( 2008 ) . School contexts form pupils ‘ societal and academic individualities and outlooks ( Borrero, Yeh, Cruz, & A ; Suda, 2012 ) . Persons in the place of societal power define who belongs and who does non, who represents the standardised norm and who does non, and who is in and who is non ( Artiles & A ; Bal, 2008 ) . School is yet another topographic point where pupils. . . face labels such as ‘gifted, ‘ holding ‘special demands, ‘ and being ‘at-risk, ‘ when in fact, it is the establishment itself that holds the power to implement such labels ( Bucholtz & A ; Hall, 2004 ; Fine, 1992 ) . These imposed classs further separate pupils into grouping of ‘normal ‘ and ‘other. ‘ Borrero, et al. , p. 5. Critical Race Theory ( CRT ) theorizes race ( Ladson-Billings and Tate, 1995 ) . CRT was foremost introduced as analytic tool in the justness system ; CRT bookmans used it as tool to place and analyse procedures in the judicial system ( Ladson-Billings & A ; Tate, 1995 ; Tate, 1997 ) . CRT was introduced by Ladson-Billings and Tate as tool to place and analyse unfairnesss or equity traps ( Linton ) in schools ‘ policies, processs, patterns, and processes that keep cultural groups of pupils from take parting and constructing societal capital, political capital, and economic capital. Scholars can utilize a CRT lens to place the what, why, and how ( Yosso, 2005 ) and who, when analyzing the â€Å" political orientation of racism † ( Yosso, p. 74 ) . It is through the CRT theoretical and analytical lens, that allow CRT bookmans to analyze, speculate, and dispute the ways racism influences schools and other societal establishments ( Yosso ; Su, 2007 ) . The subjects of CRT. CRT is framed by six subjects ( Su, 2007 ) . The current subjects are ( 1 ) race is a societal concept which is historically embedded in United States society ; ( 2 ) racism is common and profoundly engrained in United States society and is accepted as normal ; ( 3 ) color-blind equality reform serves to turn to dangerous signifiers of racism to persons but, non structural unfairnesss ; ( 4 ) United States society was built on the impression of belongings rights and Whiteness and White privilege are belongings rights protected by the authorities ; ( 5 ) those in the place of power, White persons, are in favour of antiracism structural or policy reform every bit long as it benefits White privilege and non favor is lost ( involvement convergence ) ; and ( 6 ) the voice of those most wedged by racism and unfairnesss serves an of import intent in turn toing structural and policy unfairnesss, as they portion their experiential cognition ( Su ) . Method for Evaluating Employee and Team Performance After much consideration, the method of evaluating employee and team performance will consist of performance appraisals and feedback. Timely feedback is a crucial part of a successful performance appraisal system. The feedback from the performance management program can be used in setting performance goals. The employees will receive an initial appraisal to set the goals and objectives. The employees will receive a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual feedback to measure performance based on his or her responsibilities. The team will receive a performance appraisal each quarter. Employees that do not meet his or her responsibilities will be put on a stringent re-training discipline program. The employee will be affixed with a pre-determined employee who will mentor and assist the employee in the areas he or she is failing. The employee will be re-evaluated after 30 days on his or her performance. â€Å"From an employee’s perspective, lack of regular feedback about performance detracts from his or her quality of work life. Most people want to improve their performance on the job, to receive constructive suggestions regarding areas they need to work on, to be commended for things that they do well. The cost of failure to provide feedback may result in the loss of key professional employees, the continued poor performance standards, and a loss of commitment by all employees. In sum, the myth that employees know how they are doing without adequate feedback from management can be an expensive fantasy† (Casio, 2005). Challenges of Team Performance Evaluation One type of appraisal system to be used by Kudler Fine Foods is the individual appraisal system. The system is designed to set goals, objectives, measure, and provide feedback. The individual appraisal system is to reward, and recognize the performance of an employee. The other type of appraisal is a team appraisal system. The team appraisal system is designed to allow the team to be evaluated as a group or whole. It becomes difficult to measure the team performance based on job description that may not apply to each member of the team. When designing a team appraisal system, the evaluation must be based on a measurable standard established for the entire team. The appraisal system must also be developed in a manner that offers a specific standard of performance for the entire team that can be applied to each member of the team individually. The individual evaluation to achieve a team goal makes a team appraisal system unique in itself. The motivation and expectation is clearly defined as such; employees need to feel valued in their position; an employee will consider that he or she is treated fairly if he or she perceives the ratio of his or her input to his or her outcomes to be equivalent to those around them. Thus, all else being equal, it would be acceptable for a more senior colleague to receive higher compensation, since the value of his experience (an input) is higher. The way people base their experience with satisfaction for their job is to make comparisons with themselves to the people they work with (Wikipedia, 2010). Expectations by employees from management are an important part of a team success. The team needs to know what, when, where, and how the task or goal should be accomplished or completed. By knowing the expectations will motivate the team and the individual employees to work hard at accomplishing the task. Some key expectations that are set in place are attendance, quality of work, teamwork, priorities, and individual work performance required. The goal is to balance team equity. If team equity is balanced, it motivates the employees to compete and work harder to do quality work. If equity is not balanced, employees will not be motivated to do their best work. When employees fail to do their best work, the company suffers tremendously from this effect. If pay levels of team members are unknown to one another, then individual equity would have no impact on team performance because individuals would only assume what others make. If a team member feels he or she is not rewarded properly or acknowledge for his or her input and stress or disappointment could impact the performance of the team or group. In order for Kudler to prevent loafing in the team setting, individuals will be assessed on all levels, as a team and an individual, which will help to ensure individual contribution. According to (Cascio, 2005), the two steps to take in order to prevent â€Å"free riding†, are to conduct individual performance evaluations and to encourage individuals’ behavior and skills that contribute to team performance. For a team to succeed, team members should either have different roles and or possess different skills to support the team. Different skills must be required to achieve goals of the team, (Clark, 2010). Individual employees shall be held accountable for contributions to the team effort. Individual employees shall help other members of the team believe their effort is important to the team success. Lastly, individual employees shall make members of the team fell each of his or her job is of equal valuable and important. Incentives and Benefits Packages Kudler Fine Foods Compensation Plan is established to attract qualified employees, to retain employees, and to motivate employees to direct their efforts towards achieving the goals assigned by the company. The five new employees will be on salary plan. A pay band will be established for each position title. The salary will be based on education and experience. To maximize the effectiveness of the compensation plan, Kudler Fine food will provide employees with benefit packages that include: Retirement Savings Plan 401(k), health insurance, vision care, dental care, life insurance, one week paid vacation, paid holidays. â€Å"While money is a powerful tool used to capture the minds and hearts of workers and maximize their productivity, don’t underestimate the impact of non-financial rewards† (Casio, 2005). Strategies for Managing Employees’ Career Development At Kudler Fine Foods employees are their greatest asset. The structure of the positions allows for career growth of all employees of the sales and marketing department. Managers must annually conduct an individual career development plan for its employees. The plan will identify tools necessary to help an employee develop knowledge and skills needed for his or her current position as well as future job opportunities. Managers will support requests for flexible work schedules for its employees. Each employee will receive a development plan during its initial job orientation/counseling and periodic reviews throughout the year. Feedback will be given semi-annual and one year performance appraisal. A Fair and Appropriate Compensation Plan Employees within the sales and marketing department are diverse in gender, culture, sex, ethnicity, age and much more. Diversity within the workplace affects directly the performance and results of the organization, thus, it is important to acknowledge people’s differences and recognize these differences as valuable assets to the company; it enhances good management practices by preventing discrimination and promoting acceptance inclusiveness. 3 Tips on How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay - BestEssay.Education

3 Tips on How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay 3 Tips on How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay A 5 paragraph essay, is not a type of essay in the most formal sense. Types of essays include argumentative essays, persuasive essays, definition essays, literary analysis essays, etc. Any of these types of essays can be written as a five paragraph essay. Essentially, a 5 paragraph essay is an essay format that includes the following elements: Introductory Paragraph 3 Body Paragraphs Concluding Paragraph Writing a 5 paragraph essay is quite common in introductory writing classes where students are focusing on learning the basics of essay writing more than they are focusing on elements such as research. Â  As students learn how to write a five paragraph essay, they study concepts such as defining and writing a thesis statement, creating a main idea sentence, and writing a conclusion that integrates the evidence introduced in the body paragraph into a final statement proving the writer's thesis. Another reason that instructors assign 5 paragraph essays is to teach students how to properly cite their sources both in the body of the essay, and on the works cited page or bibliography. The simple 5 paragraph format is convenient for the instructor, because they can quickly read these short essays and determine what each student understands and where each student is lacking understanding. Don't be fooled by the short length and relative simplicity of the five paragraph essay. These are sti ll graded assignments, and your work will be held to the standards of good writing. This is the reason why we have developed this brief set of tips on writing an excellent 5 paragraph paper. Content is Still Important While it is true that you are not going to delve into anything very deeply in a 5 paragraph essay, that does not mean you can be sloppy when it comes to the information you are delivering. Make sure that the facts you provide are accurate and verifiable. Use smooth transitions when moving from one paragraph to the next. Read each body paragraph to yourself in order to be certain that there is a clearly identifiable main idea sentence and that the other sentences support that main idea. Work hard to ensure that your thesis statement is well-written. Demonstrate That You Understand the Essay Writing Process Check and double check your writing. Do you have every required paragraph? What about your citations? Have you made certain that you have all of the inline citations correctly formatted? If you are using direct quotes, have your cited those correctly? Are your font size, margins, title page, and works cited page in compliance with the citation format that you are using? Spelling and Grammar are Major Factors in Your Success This is extremely important when writing a 5 paragraph essay. The short length of your paper will make any errors stand out. After all, it's pretty hard to hide a mistake in only 500 words or so. One thing that you can do to stay on top of errors as you go is to try writing a paragraph and then reviewing it for errors before going on to the next. This can make your final editing and proofreading go much more quickly.

Using Pharma Bro and Other Pop-Culture Epithets

Using Pharma Bro and Other Pop-Culture Epithets Using Pharma Bro and Other Pop-Culture Epithets Using Pharma Bro and Other Pop-Culture Epithets By Mark Nichol Not long after Martin â€Å"Pharma Bro† Shkreli stepped out of the media spotlight, the notoriously greedy former pharmaceutical-company executive briefly popped back onto the popular-culture radar to helpfully illustrate how epithets have evolved (or devolved, as some may judge). Shkreli, at the time the CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, became for a time the most hated man in the United States, based on the antipathy he inspired on social media for price gouging: He jacked up the price of a drug used to kill parasites in AIDS and cancer patients to more than fifty times its original price of about $13.50 per pill. Schadenfreude struck when he was arrested for securities fraud, and he was quickly dubbed â€Å"Pharma Bro† for his cocky frat-boy attitude. Recently, during an interview, he essentially told the world, â€Å"Don’t call me Pharma Bro† (the actual quote was the bro-ish assertion â€Å"Im not a ‘pharma bro,’ right?†), saying that the photograph he posted on Twitter showing him mimicking a rapper’s posturing, which prompted the coinage, was meant as a joke, but the epithet will likely forever be attached to him. What is an epithet, anyway? A more detailed discussion of epithets is provided in this post, but briefly, an epithet is a sobriquet, or nickname, and such usage is nothing new in popular media- or in writing in general. A few years ago, we were subjected to the hideous sight of Tan Mom, a woman who routinely spent so much time in a tanning salon that her skin turned a grotesque leathery brown. Before that there was Octomom, who, though she already had six children conceived through in vitro fertilization, gave birth to octuplets thanks to the same procedure. In the world of entertainment, a trend that flourished some years ago but has all but disappeared is to create an epithet by combining the names of two celebrities in a romantic relationship, producing such portmanteau monikers as Brangelina (for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie); the latest such appellation, Kimye, refers to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Before that, other famous people were dubbed, for example, Elvis â€Å"the King† Presley, Joe â€Å"the Yankee Clipper† DiMaggio, and John â€Å"the Great Profile† Barrymore. More recent epithets have included Kung Fu Panda (or simply Panda) for Major League Baseball player Pablo Sandoval. But as the ubiquity of social media makes it easy for anyone to become a subject of notoriety, if only for the proverbial fifteen minutes of fame, it’s likely that we will become accustomed to designations like Pharma Bro, Tan Mom, and Octomom, whether those who bear the labels like them or not. Should you, however, use such nomenclature in your professional writing? Certainly, if such usage is pertinent, whether you’re referring to one of these temporary celebrities directly or just alluding to them (perhaps describing an unfortunate sunbather who went overtime in UV exposure as â€Å"Tan Mom†). But consider your audience, as well as chronology, when name-dropping someone who has earned a derisive epithet. Pharma Bro has been in the news repeatedly for the past couple of months, so readers are likely to know who you’re talking about. But in an informational article, you might opt for a gloss, or a brief description; I provided an extensive explanation above, but it might suffice to refer to â€Å"Pharma Bro, the notorious former pharmaceutical executive arrested for price-gouging AIDS and cancer patients.† If you’re making a humorous allusion, however, as in the â€Å"Tan Mom† example in the previous paragraph, you’ll sink the joke if you weigh it down with an explanation. Either trust your readers to get the reference, or omit it as a distraction to your point. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Greek and Roman art - Essay Example The Greek Architecture is roughly divided into the Archaic Age, Classical age and the Hellenistic age. The period starting from 800-500 BC is known as the Archaic age (Pedly, 2007).. Structured temples with a rectangular shape centre and portico in the front started to appear in the Archaic Age. Excavations dating earlier to this age were found in Heroon at Lefkandi a village in Euboea Island (Catling et al., 1991). This structure was referred to as â€Å"Heroon† meaning the â€Å"Heroes Grave†. The mound is nearly 13.8 meters wide. The excavation here dated back to 950 BC. A cemetery like structure with the remains of a man’s ash and a women’s body were found here in 1960 (Lemos, 2009). The Lefkandi excavations are considered quite significant in the history of Greek Architecture because they provide ample insight into the late bronze and early ion age civilizations like Xeropolis (Lemos, 2009). Excavations carried out in Lefkandi in 2003 bought up severa l cemeteries in the area similar to the Heroon of Lefkandi. The structures of these cemeteries are the base of later Greek temples built in the Archaic age. There is a wooden veranda similar to the later days Greek temples Portico. The ashes of the man were stored in a bronze amphora with carvings depicting hunting scenes (Catling et al., 1991). ... The area surrounding Lefkandi is widely known as Old Eretria. These people who settled here should have live here from the early Bronze Age till the beginning of the Archaic period (Catling et al., 1991). They might have moved away from the area because of the Lelantine War. Another notable cemetery found close to the Heroon of Lefkandi is the cemetery for Toumba1. The building should have been erected around tenth century BC. The burial mound has a main entrance on the eastern side, three rooms and a wide corridor. Rows of wooden columns supported the roof and the building ends with an apsidal on the west (Catling et al, 1991). There is a row of post-holes on the walls facing north and south. There is a huge wooden veranda known as peristrasis. This veranda and the post-holes are found in early Greek temples constructed during the Archaic age too (Lemos, 2009). The people buried here are considered to be quite rich as several costly offerings starting from pots to jewellery were exc avated along with the bodies. They should have been offered to the dead as a token of love and gratitude (Lemos, 2009). The Heroon at Lefkandi is considered as a prominent archaeological discovery due to various reasons. The Archaic period is often considered as the beginning of Greek architecture and civilization. But, the Lefkandi excavations proved civilizations and occupations dating back to two hundred years or before prevailed in the area. These excavations were the substantial proof for the culture of Late Helladic IIIC2 period which prevailed around 1075 BCE (Evley, 2006). Many more cemeteries constructed exactly in the style of later day Greek temples like Skoubris and Palia Perivolia was found in the area (Catling et al., 1991). The
